I was due with my second boy on July 16, 2009.
My first son was born 2 ½ years earlier on his due
date! So of course I anticipated him on time or even a little
early. . . Now of course I know better than that, but the
time comes around and I started driving myself crazy thinking
this little boy was so content in the womb that he never wanted
to join us in the outside world! I treated this pregnancy
a bit different than the first. I did begin quite the same,
I was seeing the same OB that delivered Chase and assumed
that since everything with his delivery went well that I would
have a great experience with them. I should have known better
when during my first appointment the kind Dr. started mentioning
phrases such as “if you are to become high risk”
and “don’t be a hero and take the medication for
your nausea” I was appalled immediately. . I had never
had any reason to believe that I would be high risk, for I
was only 31 and I was not even that nauseous, mean while my
sister Katie was puking her brains out for most of her pregnancy
and was not even offered a thing, hum.
So after some discussion with my husband, Jon,
I made my first appointment with Labor of Love. Now I wish
that I can say it began this easily. In truth, I called Kristi
hysterically crying that I hated my doctor and needed them
to see me. I am sure that I came across as a loon, but she
was kind and calm as I was soon to learn that was always her
style! Jon and I met with Bea who did our evaluation and let
us know that we were in fact good candidates for the birthing
center. Jon expressed some of our fears of being so far from
the hospital and not having proper medical care at our finger
tips. Bea discussed the process and eased away any doubts
that we may have had. So I must say that I had the most enjoyable
experience during my visits with the ladies at Labor of Love
(I have already told Jon that I cannot wait to get pregnant
again, just to visit with them again).
Fast forward to July 18th, I thought for sure
that my son was never coming out. Jon, Chase and I had dinner
with friends and then went home to enjoy our Friday night.
Jon started busting my chops about needing to walk to start
labor. Well of course I am always right and said that would
never help and the baby would never come. But in pure spite
of my incredible husband I grabbed the dog and my cell phone
at 11:30pm and told Jon in a huffy tone to keep his cell phone
near him that I was going for a walk. I am sure that I was
a quite a sight being VERY pregnant and taking my English
Bulldog, Gunther huffing around the block at close to midnight.
30 minutes later when I came in the house Jon was waiting
for me. He said that he thought for sure that labor would
begin within the next 3 hours. I gave him a yeah right and
went to bed.
Well wouldn’t you know it, about an hour
and a half later contractions began. Jon ran and grabbed the
laptop because he needed it to time my contractions. They
seemed to be coming pretty steady after about a half hour,
about 1 minute long and about 7 minutes apart, so I called
Bea. She said that they would become so steady that I could
set my watch by them. Try to rest, sleep, and eat something
if I can and give her a call as I progress. I told Jon to
go back to sleep, not thinking he would be able to, so he
drew me a bath and fell back asleep. I had about an hour of
quiet time, then I managed to fall asleep for about an hour.
I woke up with my contractions coming much faster
and stronger. I told Jon to take Chase to the neighbors house
and I would call Bea. At this time my contractions were 4
minutes apart and coming on strong. She confirmed the time
and we were set to meet at the birth center at 5:30am. We
went to get into the car and I stopped and used the bathroom
and had at lot of blood, so Jon got nervous, but I know that
he was trying to stay calm. We got in the car and Jon asked
if I wanted to start calling family. I could barely speak
and managed to somehow grunt a NO! Jon than sped past a cop
and somehow we did not get pulled over, which is a good thing
because we didn’t have much time.
We beat Bea to Labor of Love and Jon was pacing
and I was just sitting on the front steps trying to breathe.
Bea pulled up shortly after. I went directly into the bathroom
which was where I was the most comfortable. Apparently Bea
asked Jon if we had been planning a water birth which he said
no and she told him good because we probably would not have
enough time to fill the tub which takes 30 minutes! I got
into the birthing room and laid on the bed, Bea then checked
me and I was 8 centimeters dilated! However I was beginning
to swell a little, so I had to fight the urge to push. That
was very hard! Then I was told I could push, what relief!
I only had to push for 10 minutes and Kim, the midwife student
was there to catch Maddox! He was born at 5:59am! Less than
a half hour after arriving at the birth center. He was lifted
to my chest and I just kissed and cuddled my new little boy
who I already loved more than words could describe.
I was able to get Maddox to nurse almost immediately.
We then waited for the umbilical cord to stop pulsing and
then cut the cord. We just relaxed for a while, everyone at
the birth center was very kind and allowed us to share some
very nice quiet family time getting to know our little boy.
We then were able to start making phone calls to our family!
I had a few things that I needed to do before I could head
home, including eating and showering. I got that all done
pretty quickly and of course in all my planning of what my
meal would be .Breakfast was not on my radar so I had a bowl
of chicken noodle soup at 7:00am in the morning. They weighed
Maddox, my little chunker, was 9lbs and 21 inches! After about
2 hours we were ready to go home. Jon & I never would
have imagined that we would be ready so soon, but I felt good
and we were excited for Chase to meet his little brother.
So we got him ready to go, and headed home!
